50 years of UK connector manufacturing: a Weald Electronics milestone

Published:

From legacy circular connectors to today’s high-performance interconnect and accessory ranges, here’s how we’ve built capability, protected supply, and kept production in the UK.

A quick look back (and forward)

Weald Electronics Ltd. was established on 27 April 1976. On 27 April 2026 we marked 50 years of designing and manufacturing high-performance connectors in the UK — supporting demanding sectors including Defence, Industrial, Motorsport, Mining and Offshore.

We’re part of the privately-owned Lodge Group, alongside connector distributor FC Lane Electronics Ltd and its Autosport Division, Lane Motorsport.

How it started: protecting supply and extending connector life

Our story began with a clear purpose: keep trusted connector designs available when the market was moving on. After acquiring the tooling, stock and manufacturing rights for the MK.4 range from Plessey Connectors Ltd., Weald Electronics Ltd. was incorporated in 1976 (as a family-related company to Lane Electronics). The MK.4 was re-named the Weald LMF series — ensuring ongoing support for customers facing obsolescence.

In 1981 we doubled our product range with the addition of the MK7, again purchased from Plessey Connectors Ltd. With the tooling and manufacturing rights in-house, we continued production to support existing customers — and launched the Weald LMG series.

Further acquisitions followed (this time from Pye Connectors Ltd.), allowing us to extend the range with established series including D2, BA, SM, SMA and SMC connectors.

Designing our own ranges: from legacy to innovation

By the mid-1980s we were an established name in the connector industry. In 1987, we began designing and manufacturing Weald’s own circular connector ranges: the LMV for mains voltage applications, and our version of the MIL-DTL-26482 Series 1 connector (solder version), known as the LMH series. As with LMF and LMG, each series was supported by a comprehensive accessory range, including backshells and dust caps, developed alongside the connectors.

Expanding capability: rectangular connectors and PCB interconnect

More recently, we enhanced our interconnect capability by introducing high-performance rectangular connectors—again using the proven model of acquiring tooling and manufacturing rights for well-known ranges. In 2020 we introduced the two-part, two-row 801/801CX series (designed around MIL-C-55302 (now MIL-DTL-55302) and BS9525 N0001), plus a high-density 3-row, 2mm pitch, two-part PCB connector, followed later by the M300 series. In 2023 we added the versatile 2-row, two-part, 2mm pitch LM200 series alongside our heavy-duty blind-mate rack and panel series, LMR.

Accessories that solve real-world integration problems

Alongside connectors, we’ve been investing heavily in the parts that make installations robust in the field. That includes high-quality EMC and strain relief backshells, with our circular backshell range known as the LMA series, plus protective covers to suit the most popular MIL-DTL-26482 Series 1 and MIL-DTL-38999 Series III interfaces—our protective cover range is designated the LMD series — available in a wide variety of materials and plating finishes. For top-tier Autosport applications, we’ve also developed uniquely lightweight yet robust protective covers, nut plates and gaskets to address demanding performance needs.

Made in Sussex: design, test and manufacture under one roof

With design, manufacturing and test facilities at our Slinfold Lodge HQ in Sussex, we can tailor connector solutions to meet a customer’s specific requirements — often on surprisingly short lead times. We also provide bespoke value-added electrical and optical connector termination for products distributed by our sister company, Lane Electronics.

A word from our Managing Director

“We are very pleased and proud to be celebrating 50 years of manufacturing in the UK. Weald Electronics not only offers a flexible UK source of high reliability connectors and accessories, but can also assist customers with custom designs and help overcome the problems of obsolescence and short supply of components. Over the last 50 years many aspects of our business have changed, but we believe our evolving product ranges have stood the test of time because of their design integrity in every component part—and the dependable performance and reliability they offer. We look forward to another 50 years.”
